If you're thinking about applying to medical school, your best strategy is to start planning early. From the moment you start considering medical school, you need to make strategic decisions based on your academic performance, desired speciality, and geographic location. We take the strategy of breaking-down the medical school application process into three phases:
Interestingly, the percentage of matriculating medical school students that are non-science majors is increasing rapidly. We can help you select academic majors/minors based on yor interests while meeting the minimal standards required by most medical schools.
Displaying humanistic qualities:
A major factor that medical school admission committees use for selecting future physicians is your dedication to public service. This can be in the form of mission trips, volunteering at hospice facilities, or simply volunteering at local soup kitchens. We can help quide you to the experiences that will be meaningful to you AND impressive to medical school admissions committees.
Although research is not a pre-requisite for admission to medical school, it shows a dedication to science and the ability to think critically and creatively. All of our successful medical school applicants have had some experience in the lab.
It is very important to select the right laboratory for your research. You want a lab that will train you and then give you an independent project. Importantly, you want a lab that publishes frequently and will include you on manuscripts so you'll have some tangible evidence of your contribution to the research. We can help you identify the best labs to do your research and facilitate communication with the investigators.
Although this application appears very standard, successful applicants use every component of this form to sell themselves as compassionate, dedicated and academically successful students. One very important component is the personal statement which should reveal your dedication to medicine and humanistic qualities. We can help you prepare each section of the AMCAS application to highlight your impressive qualities and be sure to get noticed.
Selecting the proper medical school:
Each school that you send your AMCAS to will cost money. Although some applicants choose to canvas all schools, you should critically review your application to determine which schools you're most likely to meet the requirements. More importantly, you should consider each medical schools training program to determine where you'll have the best chance of success and the most enjoyable time. Medical school is stressful but you need not make your life miserable by choosing the wrong school for your personality.
Letters of recommendation are not required for the primary application but you should have these ready for immediate release if your medical school application results in a request of a secondary application. Having glowing letters of recommendation are critical to demonstrate the impact that you've had on professors and classmates. They should speak directly to your qualities of leadership, humanity, dedication and academic success. We can help you create a document that you can provide to potential references so that they'll be able to write the perfect letter.
Secondary Application and Interview
In addition to your personal statement, many medical schools will ask for additional essays that cover either generic topics or specific topics such as why you're applying to that particular medical school and what attributes do you have that make you a good fit for their medical training program. Often, these have short deadlines and the earlier you get the materials to the medical school admissions office, the sooner they can invite you for an interview. We can help you prepare for this process by creating some general documents that you can tailor for each medical school application so you can make a better impression in a more timely fashion.
The interview is THE most important component of the medical school application process. You should be able to sell yourself as a compassionate, friendly, and intelligent individual. You also need to make a lasting impression on everyone you encounter during your medical school interview. From the moment you arrive in town until you return home, you should be handling yourself as you would during an interview (including the hotel, dinner, breakfast, parking, arriving at the school, etc.).
We can help with preparing you with mock interviews. Specifically, we will assist you in understanding the schools at which you'll be inerviewing and knowing specific questions to ask during the interview.
We will also help with improving your image in dress, body-language, and initiating small-talk. Each of these qualities will help you make a lasting impression at the medical school interview.
